Private health insurance (PKV)
The most important things about private health insurance in brief:

-
Private health insurance is open to self-employed people, civil servants and well-paid employees .
-
The level of insurance coverage depends on the scope of coverage selected .
-
In addition to the scope of benefits, entry age and state of health determine the amount of the private health insurance premium; income has no influence.
What is private health insurance (PKV)?

Private comprehensive health insurance replaces statutory health insurance (GKV). Private health insurance provides at least the same level of coverage as statutory health insurance and can be significantly higher depending on individual preference. Every privately insured customer can flexibly design their desired coverage and choose the appropriate tariff.
Important note: Unlike statutory health insurance, there is no PKV family tariff. Each insured person receives their own individual tariff and scope of benefits. Our MLP consultants will be happy to help you choose the right tariff for your private health insurance.
What are the special features of medical treatment?

In contrast to statutory health insurance, a doctor's visit is somewhat different for patients with private health insurance (PKV). If you ever need to consult a specialist, you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you receive an appointment suggestion. The only drawback: PKV patients usually have to pay in advance for medical treatment and for purchasing medication. The bill is then checked by the respective company and paid directly to the insured person.
Who can take out private health insurance?

Private health insurance is open to three groups of people:
-
Self-employed/freelancers
-
Officials
-
higher-earning employees
Self-employed people have the choice of private or
statutory health insurance

Self-employed persons or freelancers have the choice between health insurance or voluntary coverage in a statutory health insurance (GKV) and private health insurance (PKV). Since the PKV tariffs are calculated solely according to benefits and risk, young self-employed people in particular can save money with the entry-level tariff.
The entry-level tariff offers extensive benefits above the statutory level at the start of self-employment, with the option to top up these benefits at certain times - and without further health checks.
Private health insurance is the first choice for civil servants

Civil servants receive financial support for their health care from their employer in the form of a so-called allowance. They only need partial insurance cover for the remaining costs. The statutory health insurance (GKV) does not take this concept into account and charges the full premium. This is why private health insurance (PKV) is the better solution for civil servants. Supplementary tariffs can also be used to close gaps in insurance. If you would like to find out more about health insurance for those entitled to allowance, we would be happy to advise you personally.
Private health insurance (PKV) in comparison for higher earners

Employees whose income is above the annual wage limit (JAEG), as well as the self-employed, can choose between GKV and PKV health insurance. The JAEG will be 69,300 euros in 2024. Here, too, private health insurance (PKV) offers various price/benefit alternatives depending on the starting age, state of health and selected tariff. This means that well-paid employees can also benefit from individually and flexibly insuring themselves with PKV.
Are there alternatives to private health insurance?

Those who cannot or do not want to switch to private health insurance can optimise their statutory health insurance through a private supplementary health insurance.
How are private health insurance tariffs calculated?

While statutory health insurance requires a flat rate contribution of a certain percentage of income, private health insurance calculates contributions differently. They are based on the desired scope of benefits and the applicant's individual health risk. These points have a major influence:
-
Entry age: Young people are statistically healthier than older people.
-
Pre-existing conditions: Those who suffer from chronic illnesses or have already had serious illnesses are likely to incur higher costs with private health insurance in the future.
Therefore, every application for private health insurance contains health questions. Please answer these in detail and honestly so as not to jeopardize your future insurance coverage. If the provider classifies the risk as high, premium surcharges, exclusions of benefits or rejection of the application are possible.a
How much does private health insurance cost?

The focus should not be on the costs of private health insurance (PKV), but rather on the scope of services and the optimal coverage for your individual needs. The contribution to your PKV depends on the tariff you choose.
The basic tariff of private health insurance (PKV)

In Germany, all residents are required to have insurance . Everyone must be able to prove that they have appropriate health insurance. This is why private health insurance (PKV) also offers a basic tariff for basic care. This is intended to guarantee that non-compulsory members of statutory health insurance (GKV) also receive insurance. The benefits of basic care correspond to those of statutory insurance. The provider must accept the application and may not charge any surcharges.
Secure admission to private health insurance early

A Option tariff allows you to switch to private health insurance later on, based on your current state of health. With an exclusive acceptance guarantee – and therefore without a new health check.
If you want, you can even improve your health care today with the optional tariff. It can also be combined with additional insurance.
Can private health insurance contributions be deducted from taxes?

Yes, the contributions to private health insurance can be deducted from taxes, but only partially. Private health insurance offers a wider range of benefits and does not just include the necessary basic coverage like statutory health insurance (GKV).
Is it possible to cancel private health insurance?

You can terminate your private health insurance policy with three months' notice up until the end of the insurance year. You also have a special right of termination after a premium increase. In this case, the letter of termination must be received by the provider no later than two months after receiving notification of the change.
